EVIL KEANEVIL X CAPER
Kicking off BSIDE Gallery's 2019 program we have our studio resident and homie Evil Keanevil joining forces with Caper for a collaborative exhibition filled with colour and nostalgia.
Take a trip down memory lane and see iconic cartoon characters recreated in the contemporary styles that both artists have honed over the years, from acrylic paintings and stencils, to intricate woodcuts.

Caper
Caper has been an active street artist for over 12 years, creating illustrations and paintings that parody mass media and popular culture. His use of multi-layered imagery in his works at times appear idiosyncratic and quirky, whilst acting as typical by-products of American superabundance and marketing.
Caper's works are saturated with mental inertia, cliches and bad jokes, and by their nature question the coerciveness of the superficial.
Evil Keanevil
Evil Keanevil's work is a dynamic and bold exploration of entropy and deconstruction of reality. Pop culture icons, as well as original characters are deconstructed to reveal their core components, usually by liquefying or melting the subject.
Questions and themes have risen through the meltingly matter, bubbling through the muck and surfacing in the paintings themselves - which components can be stripped away, and by what measure before the subject becomes unrecognisable? When the subject is melted down, is it their perception of reality being manipulated, or the viewer's?

"Appropriation comes natural to me, my awareness of conventional and pop art reflects into my life creating a space for appropriation and the art of copying. My delivery and process of creation is sporadic and fuelled by my mental illness and traumatic past. Evident in my works which you will read soon. [DIRECTOR’S CUT]
JESWRI
BANGARANG is JESWRI’s second solo exhibition.
A show exploring all the distractions that a kid from the 90’s would use as a too escape a cold, chaotic world.
BANGARANG was a commonly used word throughout the 90’s hit movie Hook. ‘Bangarang’ is a Jamaican word that loosely translates to disturbance. JESWRI is an Australian-Artist who has worked along some names like Young Henrys, Audio Technica, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Vans and Mattel.
BANGARANG was first held in Sydney, last December - where JESWRI showcased 12 flash sheets of twisted and alternate realities of famous pop-culture references, such as The Simpons, Toy Story, WWE and various cartoons that everyone grew up with.
BSIDE Gallery in Melbourne has the joy of experiencing the 'DIRECTORS CUT' with additional (never-seen-before) artworks that were created exclusively for this event. One night only.

Helping Hoops Untold is a photography exhibition giving our children a platform to show the world their creativity and how they see the world. Over the past 12 months, we have handed the camera over and got out their way so they can be the storytellers and document what is important to them. 80 works will be on display from Friday May 24 to Sunday May 26 (midday to 7pm all days), following a launch party on Thursday May 23 from 6-9pm.

SPEAK ON IT #4
If you haven't come along before, Speak On It is a bimonthly gathering that offers a supportive and safe space for artists to come together to discuss mental health through Hip Hop (rap or singing) and Spoken Word Poetry.
The night aims to bring people together to really connect with their community and to ensure they know they are not alone.
This is a not-for-profit community event that encourages artists to get deep and share what's on their mind and listen to and perform to likeminded people, while helping to break the stigma of mental health.
This intimate event is held in a safe space/gallery, hidden from the general public, and fosters a welcoming environment that supports artists and opens up a conversation about mental health, allowing the sharing of similar experiences of people in the room. Not to mention, we'll be surrounded by amazing local art.
This is an inclusive space, and welcomes and encourages people of all walks of life and ages to attend.

THE BLIND EYE
OF THE NEEDLE
MONA QUILTY
Through manipulation of the animal body, Mona Quilty's work explores the ethical propositions inherent in the human-animal relationship, aiming to question the taxidermic process itself as a means of negating animal agency.
When we witness the abject, we are reminded of ourselves.
"Within my work, abjection through taxidermy acts as impetus for our repulsion against both the material truths of the body and the fragility of the conscious mind, with death unifying matter and thought as a single system.
With this, the animal agent is rendered down to a symbolic vessel, presenting human-centric dilemmas that the artwork itself aims to dispute.
This poses a question: How can the art work interrogate the anthropocentric viewpoint when the animal body is used as a vehicle for doing so?
With the premise behind my work as contradictory, the taxidermic animal is here as a tool, revelatory through the question of its own creation.
The object stares back."

Mona Quilty is a second year Sculpture and Spatial Practice student at the VCA. She uses taxidermy and performance as a methodology for her art practice, focusing on the human animal relationship and the moment of encounter.
This body of work attempts to recognise our perceptual limitations while addressing our inability to reconcile the unknown.

About FullHouse Prints:
FullHouse Prints was created in São Paulo by brothers Cristiano and Alexandre Enokawa during 1995, in the midst of the creative scene and underground culture of skateboarding and urban art. They collaborated with local artists and the technical evolution of serigraph printing in Brazil. They are pioneers in silkscreen printing, bringing together a collection of works by some of the best national and international urban artists of South America.
About the Curator:
Beatriz Pereira is a cultural producer and the owner of iArtBrasil (Est. 2015) currently based in Melbourne, Australia.
iArtBrasil was born from Beatriz’s desire to represent and produce artists within the street art capital of São Paulo and has been active in the scene curating and producing exhibitions, projects and commissions for 4 years, both locally and internationally.
Her other achievements to date include working for renowned commercial art gallery Luis Maluf (2016) as a cultural producer and gallery assistant, management for internationally-acclaimed artist Cranio (2015-2018), co-curated a charity auction for Diamonds in the Kitchen (2018), and curating an collective exhibition for San Paul Gallery with 14 Brazilian street artists in Miami (2018) .
ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE
John & Viki Murray
Absent Without Leave is a collection of works by the Lightning Ridge-based creative duo Viki and John Murray.
The collection is the result of spending a two-month summer residence immersed in the street art and multicultural hub of Melbourne.
Featuring collaborative and individual works in canvas, wood and found objects, the vibrant pieces are a playful marriage of John’s distinctly honed acrylic brush work and Viki’s monotone figurative stencils.
Limited edition prints of public art pieces completed in Fitzroy, Melbourne CBD and East Brunswick in early 2019 will feature as well. As is the transient nature of street art, some of these public works have since disappeared; making them great collectables of a particular time and place.
John Murray’s name is now synonymous with outback art, with a career spanning over 35 years. His gallery, established in 1992 in the opal mining township of Lightning Ridge NSW, is well known and highly regarded. The photorealistic landscapes and often quirky depictions of country life and bush humour John creates are celebrated both in Australia and by international collectors. Some of these works feature as public art pieces across NSW, QLD and VIC.
In the summer of 2019 John enjoyed collaborating with Melbourne street artist Caper on the BSIDE Gallery walls, and at Grumpy’s ‘Never Faded’ monthly paint jam curated by Shannon Keane.
Viki Murray is a Lightning Ridge-based photographer/stencil artist and co-director of John Murray Art Gallery, with a permanent display space in the gallery. Her photo artistry is varied in style and themes and incorporates mediums of sumi ink, paint, and aerosol painted 5-8 layered stencils.

Garden Party is a group exhibition that will showcase work by a number of established and emerging artists and designers from Australia with intersecting craft, design and illustration backgrounds.
Inspired by the instinctive tendency for humans to seek connections with nature, each artist is asked to examine their relationship with plants in daily life, exploring ideas such as growth, fragility, joy, dependence, disappointment, aversion, friendship or beyond, and create a piece of work in response spanning disciplines including illustration, textiles, ceramics and more.

MEDIUM MELBOURNE PRESENTS; PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIES COLLEGE 2019 GRADUATION EXHIBITION ‘AS I GAZE’ PRINT SALE FUNDRAISER EVENT.
AN ECSTATIC EVENING THAT BRINGS TOGETHER LIVE MUSIC AND PHOTOGRAPHY OF EACH MAJOR FIELD OF STUDY; COMMERCIAL, DOCUMENTARY AND FINE ART, AS WELL AS THEIR INTERSECTIONS.
On October 3rd, Medium and the Photography Studies College (PSC) Graduating Class of 2019 are celebrating emerging artists and their endeavours in the heart of Fitzroy at BSIDE Gallery. A collection of fine-art printed images to be sold, hung on the walls of the space and serenaded to by an array of local musicians. The likes of which are inspired by many of the same ideas expressed in the photographs; identity, the ‘other’ and the perceptions of those around us, cultivated by innate human interactions and experiences. During the bursts of song and dance, attendees are invited to buy any and all images on the walls of the space. Ranging between $5 - $30, each purchase made on the night will financially support the PSC Graduates for their End-of-Year Exhibition, ‘As I Gaze’, at the Centre of Contemporary Photography, Fitzroy.
All are welcome to come along to the fundraiser; fellow members of Melbourne's art and music communities, friends and loved ones. This will be an exuberant evening and to be enjoyed by everyone attended, full of interesting conversation, stellar dancing bathed by the assemblage of photographs.

TOPO’S ADVENTURES IN MELBOURNE
Solo exhibition by TOPO
'Topo's Adventures in Melbourne' features a selection of original works by Spanish artist Topo who has resided in Melbourne for the past year.
Topo's style has developed immensely during his time rocking the city laneways and surrounds, meeting new pals and getting up to mischief - this translates onto his series of original paintings, sculptures, digital collages and mixed media artworks.

COLOUR BLIND
Solo exhibition by Varun Sinh
"Colour Blind" is a collection of recent works by Varun Sinh.
The artist's own colour-blindness led him to question the way most of us perceive colour. This exhibition explores the concept of colour as an evolutionary construct; something that is subjectively interpreted by the brain. We naturally assume that what we see is somehow 'correct' and associate meaning behind it. In reality, there are other people, animals, maybe even plants that perceive light and colour very differently. This series of paintings seeks to explore the possibilities of what is actually out there. What if we could see things clearly, free from the limitations of our human capacity?
The exhibition contains over 20 large, primarily acrylic on canvas pieces, all created in 2019 during the artist's sabbatical.
Varun is based in Brisbane. Originally from India, he moved to Australia as a child and learnt of his colour-blindness when he was 14. This is his second solo exhibition.

You’ve washed up on a beach, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. What now? How should I know? Go for a stroll and soak it all up before real life catches up with you. That seems like the kind of nonsense that someone like you would be into.
Welcome to Vanilla Hills, the first ever exhibition from comedian Tommy Dassalo. Paintings, drawings, screen prints and more, influenced by video game instruction manuals, empty pizza boxes, tasteful palettes and summer flings.
Opening night is on November 20, from 6 - 9pm at BSIDE Gallery in Fitzroy. There'll be stuff for sale as well as cold ones from Young Henrys, sausage rolls made by my Mum and cupcakes made by Cake Boy (my friend Drew). There'll also be a mixtape put together by DJ Levins.

1995 to the FUTURE is the debut solo exhibition from ZENA coming to BSIDE Gallery this December.
Zena Dubray is a multidisciplinary artist originally from Queensland, Australia. After jumping straight into the art world from high school and getting into her first group show in 2015, she’s never looked back. Now residing in Melbourne, this talented artist will definitely turn some heads with such a bold vibrant body of work.
‘1995 to the FUTURE’ has been 4 years in the making and will be sure to excite audiences with a multidimensional experience of paintings, drawings, photography, unconventional jewellery, up-cycled fashion & installations.

Introducing to you the inaugural Safari Ball. This most auspicious of occasions is to be held amidst the extravagant regalia of our own heritage listed Fitzroy Town Hall, no less.
Awaiting you is an evening of wonderfully talented performers, including magicians, burlesque dancers with serpents, a full funk ensemble as well as pre recorded music selected by well established Disc Jockeys to have you and your partner steppin’ into the wee hours of the morning. Sumptuous foods and a full bar of quality beverages also on hand.
One of your hosts is bound to take the stage himself, with traditional Didjeridu in hand, joining Robert Young and Shaun Lee for the Welcome To Country at 8.08 pm sharp. Not to be missed!
Drink specials from 7pm. but all the more special with your involvement.
Dress to Impress, leading ladies and dapper gentlemen. Suggested attire may include animal print, evening gowns and jungle adventure garments, as you wish.

CONNECTING COLOURS
Solo exhibition by Annie Fox
A collection of Annie Foxes work titled 'Connecting Colours'.
This exhibition explores human vulnerability and connection, with the art process itself acting as a safe container and connector. Mixed-media portraits, and live music from FOX (at 7pm) is the result of this ongoing exploration.
What is it about and why?
This exhibition is exploring the containment needed to be vulnerable to strengthen oneself as an individual and as a collective. Annie hopes this exhibition inspires the viewer to engage with their vulnerability within their community. Annie feels this is of particular importance in a world where isolation appears to be on the rise. The people Annie paints are invited to sit for her, share and be vulnerable in a therapeutic and safe place. She tries to capture this vulnerability through the subconscious given expression through idiosyncrasies, exposing truth and beauty. Paralleling and inspired by nature as it dares to show both its strength and fragility simultaneously, creating a compelling vision. In her artworks, Annie attempts to project her minds-eye as it converges with a heightened sense of psyche and reality.
But who is she?
Annie is a multimedia Artist and Art Psychotherapist.
